When it comes to replacing or upgrading doors and windows, the Canadian Government is offering the following grants to homeowners:

Replace sliding glass doors or windows with ENERGY STAR 3 Certified Models which meet the following criteria:

Energy Rating ≥ 34 or U-Factor of 1.22 W/m²K or less

These are capped at $125 per opening.

Replace sliding glass doors or windows with ENERGY STAR Most Efficient Models which meet the following criteria:

Energy Rating ≥ 40 or U-Factor of 1.05 W/m²K or less

These are capped at $250 per opening.

Replace hinged doors with ENERGY STAR Certified Models which meet the following criteria:

Energy Rating ≥ 34 or U-Factor of 1.22 W/m²K or less

These are capped at $125 per opening.

What is the Benefit of all the Upgrades and Retrofits?

Once you have got the windows and doors upgraded as per the requirements, you can apply for a $5000 reimbursement to help cover the costs. While you would have to keep funds ready and pay for the renovation, once your grant is approved, you will be gaining a good amount of money thanks to the government.

Additionally, your electricity costs will go down as your homes become more energy-efficient. The temperature will remain more constant and will not take a toll on your HVACs and ACs thereby reducing your bills.

Not just this, once you get these upgrades, it will increase and boost the market value of your house as well making it a good investment over time. 

Things to Keep in Mind When Applying for the Grant

A few factors should be kept in mind when applying for the Canada Green Home Grant:

• All equipment and parts must be manufactured in Canada.
• The money will not be provided upfront. You must have funds ready to get the upgrades. Once the upgrades are completed, the grants will be released post evaluation.
• The government has announced that the $5000 is applicable per household and not per person. Multiple people in the household cannot apply for the grant.
• You must be able to provide documentation to prove that this is your primary residence.
• Pre-retrofit evaluation and post-retrofit evaluation are necessary. The grant will only be provided when both evaluations are completed. 
• Houses built in the last 6 months or sooner are not eligible for the grant. 
• A record of the receipts and future invoices should be kept till 31st March 2028
